The August 2026 Visa Bulletin delivered one of the year’s largest gains for immigrant spouses and children, and shut the door entirely on EB-2 applicants from India.
What Moved Forward
The F2A category, covering spouses and minor children of green card holders, carries a final action date of July 22, 2026 for nearly every country of chargeability. That is unusually close to current. Mexico’s F2A date sits a year earlier, at July 22, 2025.
On the Dates for Filing chart, F2A is listed as current across all chargeability areas, meaning applicants may assemble and submit documents regardless of priority date where that chart applies.
What Closed
Two categories are marked “U” for unavailable in August: EB-2 India and the EB-5 Unreserved category for India. No immigrant visa numbers are being issued in either.
The State Department also warned inside the bulletin that heavy demand from Indian nationals in EB-1 may force that category to become unavailable in the coming weeks if India’s prorated limit is reached before the fiscal year ends. EB-1 India currently stands at October 15, 2022.

Why the Whipsaw
The bulletin offers an unusually candid explanation. Immigrant visa issuance rates for nationals of certain countries have fallen as a result of recent presidential proclamations restricting entry. To use the visa numbers still available in fiscal year 2026, the State Department advanced dates across multiple categories for applicants from other countries.
The predictable side effect is volatility. When demand materializes faster than projected, dates snap backward.

What This Means for You
If your priority date is current, move. Cut-off dates that advance sharply often retrogress just as sharply, and September, the last month of the fiscal year, is historically the most volatile bulletin of the year.
If you are in EB-2 India or EB-5 Unreserved India, nothing filed this month can be approved on the basis of visa number availability. That reflects the numerical limits, not the merits of your case.
Relief may arrive October 1, when fiscal year 2027 begins and the annual limits reset at 140,000 employment-based and 226,000 family-sponsored visas, with unused family numbers spilling into the employment categories.
Diversity visa applicants face a hard stop. Entitlement for all DV-2026 selectees ends September 30, 2026, and the bulletin warns numbers could be exhausted before that date.
One practical reminder: use the Final Action Dates chart, not the Dates for Filing chart, unless USCIS has stated on its website that the filing chart may be used for your category that month. This article is for general information only and is not legal advice.
