August 27, 2025 | @DailyImmigrant — The Trump administration has proposed new rules to limit how long foreign students, exchange visitors, and journalists can stay in the U.S.
Currently, visas often last as long as a program or job assignment. Under the new proposal, they would be capped at fixed terms.
🔑 What’s Changing?
F-1 & J-1 visas (students & exchange visitors): maximum of 4 years.
I visas (foreign journalists): maximum of 240 days.
Chinese journalists: only 90 days.
🧾 Next Steps:
The proposal is open for 30 days of public comment before finalization.
⚠️ Important Reminders:
Students in long academic programs may need to apply for renewals mid-study.
Media groups warn this could disrupt coverage and limit press access.
